| Overview: Nearby Construction, Roadway Improvement Projects |
|
Whether you’re an employee, patient, or loved one heading to URMC, nearby construction projects could slow your travel. Once completed, we anticipate that these projects will make getting to and from our campus much easier. Below, we’ve sketched out the scope and target end dates for five major projects that might affect your commute. We recommend building in an extra ten minutes to allow for delays. To help you plan your trip, we’ll post more detailed notices at right. We hope that sharing this information, as we learn of it, is also helpful to our neighbors! ROADWORK
This multi-phase, multi-year project – expected to wrap up by fall 2015 – involves some elements nearby URMC, including the installation of a traffic circle (see larger diagram) where Kendrick and East River roads meet (construction is slated to start in late 2012 and wrap-up by late December 2013). Other upgrades in the vicinity include a revamp of the Kendrick Road bridge (creating a northbound onramp to 390), and a slight move of the current southbound exit ramp (16A). The project will create a more practical “back door” for accessing our campus. More detailed information was shared in our URMC Pulse newsletter; ongoing updates are also available at www.dot.ny.gov/access390.
On a separate but related note, and also funded by the state DOT, I-390 bridge work over the Genessee River and park is planned for approximately 90 days (likely split between two six-week phases) sometime between May and November 2013. The effort involves a microfiber resurfacing of the concrete to improve traction and driver safety on a section of overpass between exits 17 and 16A. Work calls for lane reductions (one lane is expected to remain open in either direction), and will be coordinated closely with other ongoing projects at East River and Kendrick roads.
Extending along Mount Hope, from Cook Street down to Rossiter Road, the project aims to improve safety along the most accident-prone section of road in the county. It’ll also build a more efficient thoroughfare for our upcoming College Town development, thanks to a new center median (to restrict left-hand turns out of businesses) and road widening. Work began in summer 2012, took a break over the winter, and revved up again in March 2013. (View the DOT's Mount Hope webcam, here.)
Beginning April 15, 2013, through Oct. 1, 2013, the stretch of Westfall Road between South Clinton Avenue and East Henrietta Road will be reduced to one-way – westbound traffic only. The project calls for a complete overhaul of this pot-hole-heavy corridor, including regrading, widening, new curbs, sidewalks, landscaping, drainage and more.
BUILDING PROJECTSCollege TownCollege Town – the new mixed-use development planned along Mount Hope Avenue, featuring restaurants, shops, offices, market-rate apartments, and more – will serve as a vibrant gateway to our University and provide convenient shopping and amenities to URMC employees and neighborhood residents. Site preparation requires gradually reducing some employee parking areas to make way for actual groundbreaking and construction, which will take place in spring 2013. Once groundbreaking takes place, construction vehicles will move into the ‘footprint’ of the construction area, eliminating most roadway congestion. New Golisano Children’s HospitalWhile most work will take place on our property, construction necessitated a mix of temporary and permanent relocations – impacting our Cashier’s Office, Patient Discharge point, James P. Wilmot Cancer main entrance, as well as the Patient Discharge/Cath Lab entrance, staff shuttles, and a number of RTS bus stops.
